Sharpen Your Knives with What?!
Since it’s still early on in the school year, I’m trying to be a good mom and make Pinterest-worthy sandwiches for my children’s lunches. Fancy rolls, deli-meat piled high, (maybe a little bacon to take it to the next level) fresh cheese slices, perfect lettuce, and juicy tomatoes – nothing is too good for my little sweeties. (By next month, they’ll be getting peanut butter & jelly on the heels of plain bread!) I did, however, notice I was having a tough time cutting the tomatoes. I kept crushing them because the knife wouldn’t easily slice through. How would my kids survive such a travesty of mutilated tomatoes?
Then I remembered that Nora, my wise business partner and neighbor, had a perfect hack for honing knives to their proper tomato-slicing state, and it involves nothing but a coffee mug! Her mother-in-law showed her this quick and easy tip:
How to sharpen your knife with a ceramic coffee mug:
- Just take a ceramic coffee mug, and turn it over.
- Hold the blade at a slight angle to the coarse bottom of the mug and rub the knife back an forth a few times on each side.
- This smooths out imperfections, creating a better cutting edge. The difference will be immediate.
- Wipe any shavings off with a paper towel being careful not to cut yourself.
- Give it a try! Instant Gratification!
- This knife sharpener cost around $40, but this knife hack is FREE!
- See how the knife cuts through the tomato with ease. (Now I’m feeling a little hungry!)
My children won’t have to suffer the embarrassment of smooshed tomatoes any more! Crisis averted!
