Henry Ford and Choosing Our Attitudes
Although Henry Ford technically didn’t invent the automobile, he revolutionized the industry. Developing the assembly line is arguably his greatest contribution to creating an industrialized world. In our modern time, I might argue that one of his quotes can revolutionize our lives today.
“Whether you think you can or you think you can’t–you’re right.” -Henry Ford
Simply stated, but with a powerful impact, Henry Ford’s words remind us of the importance of choosing our attitudes wisely. We all need to understand that we have some measure of control over our destinies. That control lies in our attitudes and how much we believe in ourselves.
This message has been repeated over and over in many ways in my life. Today, I heard it as a part of our church sermon. As a child and as a parent with my own children, we read the story of “The Little Engine That Could,” in which a tiny train engine repeats the mantra “I think I can” over and over to give himself the strength to pull a huge load of train cars over the mountain to deliver goodies to all the good boys and girls. In the story the kids get toys and food delivered to them, just in time, and because of the hard work, perseverance, and faith the train engine possessed.
In life, we need to consistently make the choice to believe in ourselves and know we have the power within us to succeed in whatever we put our minds to do. Making the jump from having a dream to making that dream a reality lies in the action and attitudes we provide. These steps can help us stay on the road to success!
- Dream – Think about what you want. It’s ok to dream big.
- Believe – Choose an attitude of success. Visualize attaining the success.
- Plan – Setting goals allows us to have an organized plan to get where we want to go. You couldn’t build a house without a plan, tools, and knowledge, and you can’t achieve a goal without a plan.
- Act – Take the steps necessary to succeed. Set up smaller steps along the path to your goal. Start small and keep your eyes on the prize.
- Appreciate – Along the way, take time to appreciate how far you have come. Celebrate life’s victories, big and small!
