Easy Swedish Meatballs

A taste of Sweden without a trip to IKEA!

Easy Swedish Meatballs

Delicious meatballs in a flavorful gravy may become a family favorite.

Ingredients

    Meatballs
  • 1.5 lbs ground beef
  • 3/4 cup Panko bread crumbs (or 1/2 cup regular bread crumbs)
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 2 Tablespoons dried, chopped onions (in the spice aisle)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 Tablespoon olive oil
  • Gravy
  • 4 Tablespoons butter
  • 3 Tablespoons flour
  • 4  cups beef broth
  • 3/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • Parmesan cheese  and fresh parsley as an optional garnish

Directions

  1. Mix meatball ingredients in a large bowl, making sure all ingredients are well-incorporated. Roll into 1 1/2″ meatballs.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet, and brown the meatballs. Drain on a plate lined with paper towels. Cook meatballs in batches if necessary.
  3. Make the gravy in the same skillet. Melt butter in the skillet over medium heat. Whisk flour into butter, and cook, stirring constantly, until golden brown (3-5 minutes).
  4. Slowly whisk in beef broth. Increase heat to medium-high.
  5. Whisk in cream, and bring to a simmer. Add sugar and Worcestershire sauce.
  6. Continue simmering, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened (5-7 minutes). Season with salt and pepper.
  7. Reduce heat to low. Add meatballs to the sauce, turning to coat, and heat completely.
  8. Serve over egg noodles, rice, or mashed potatoes. Garnish with Parmesan cheese.
