Have you been binge watching “The Crown” on Netflix? I think it is fabulous and have especially enjoyed Winston Churchill’s character played by John Lithgow. Wisdom, power, and love of country were powerful motivators for him. As a man of many words, famous Churchill quotes are prolific. I came across one the other day that really resonated with me.
“You will never reach your destination if you stop and throw stones at every dog that barks.” -Winston Churchill
Incredibly visual, this simple quote speaks to letting negativity, fear, and distraction get in the way of our goals. I cannot understand why there are sometimes those within our social circles who refuse to offer support and almost seem to hope and wait for failure. Relationships with that type of negativity become toxic quite quickly.
The insecurity that can arise when we listen to the “Why would you do that?” and “That won’t work!” statements from our so-called friends can lead to a paralyzing fear on our journey to reach a goal. Fear can stop us in our tracks and introduce us to self-doubt. We then question our original motives.
Second-guessing our motives instead of moving forward is a distraction. Doubting our ideas diminishes our progress and keeps us from realizing our potential.
What do we do to stay on track? Confidence and perseverance are keys to success.
Trusting in ourselves and our ability to make decisions that are in the best interests of ourselves and our loved ones helps us realize that our goals are purpose-driven and worthwhile. That confidence boost allows us to take the next steps in our journey.
Churchill also pointed out that “Success is not final, failure is not fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts.” It is acceptable to make mistakes. We can learn so much from them! We must persevere and keep moving forward, ignoring the barking dogs!
