DIY Reusable Chore Charts and To Do Lists

My kids LOVED any type of check list when they were younger, but as they’ve grown up and gotten more independent, I’ve stopped giving them chore charts. They know what they need to do and usually take care of the items. However, my friend Laura has two small active boys, and she is trying to teach them how to be responsible for their daily routine. She shared her fantastic training tool with me, and I knew I had to share it with all of you!

Laura created a dry erase to do list for each boy that can be used again and again. She found a printable list on Pinterest and put it in a frame with a glass front. The kids get a dry erase marker and can mark off the tasks as they complete them. Genius! I used to use chore chart pads and would fill them out over and over until I got sick of doing it!

These chore charts are hung at the boys’ level, so they can easily reach them. They serve as a visual aid that the kids can manipulate, giving them control of their environment. What a positive training tool! I think every home with kids should have these!

Here are the easy steps for the DIY Chore Chart or To Do List:

Frame with Glass – An 8 x 10 inch frame will hold an 8 1/2 x 11 inch printer paper that has been trimmed down. A 12 x 12 inch frame would hold a 8 1/2 x 11 inch printer paper mounted onto a 12 x 12 inch piece of scrapbook paper.
Chart – Print chore chart or to do lists. Search on Pinterest for ideas. There are many to choose from. Here are three free printable blank chore charts. Scroll down to the three charts and click on each one to download the .pdf files. Try this Family Chore Chart Template for Microsoft Office. It can be customized in Microsoft Word before printing. You can also make your own. Get creative!
Personalize Chart – Use a pre-printed form or create your own. Leave some blank spaces for items that aren’t completed every day. Those can be written in on the glass of the frame.
Assemble – Put the chart in the frame. Embellish the frame with ribbon, flowers, Legos, etc. if you want. Decide if you want it on a table or hung on a wall. Keep a dry erase marker handy.

So simple; just insert your chore chart into the frame!
