Chalkboards are everywhere now! Not just for the classroom, they are in restaurants, offices, and at home. I have one in the kitchen for the weekly menu. My sister-in-law uses one for the day’s activities. My daughter likes to put school assignments on hers. I even have one to welcome guests who are visiting or announce holidays. The sound of chalk on a board (not fingernails) is very soothing to me. Maybe I should have been a teacher…
Chalkboards are easy to make. Cabinet doors are my favorite medium, but you can use your imagination! Boards/plywood, unused platters, old framed art, or anything to which chalkboard paint will adhere will work. Thrift stores and garage sales are great places to look.
You will need (Check out links at the end of this post to have materials delivered to your door!):
• Board
• Chalkboard paint (Found at home improvement stores, craft stores, online. Can be sprayed or brushed on.)
• Paint or embellishments (hooks or knobs, silk flowers, ribbon, etc.)
• Paint brushes
• Painters tape
• Mounting hardware and tools to mount the board
Tape off the area you do not wish to paint, and paint the chalkboard area. I like to do three light coats, letting it dry in between. When it’s dry, the chalkboard needs to be “seasoned.” Rub chalk all over the board and wipe it off to prevent chalk markings from remaining after it is erased.
Paint or embellish the rest of the board to make it pretty or to add function. Having some hooks or cabinet pulls can make a nice place to hang a basket for chalk and an eraser.
Add mounting hardware and install. Instant menu, message center, daily calendar, welcome sign!
