Do you ever flip through home magazines or watch HGTV and drool over room makeovers but realize you don’t have the budget to redo a whole room? Try using and updating what you have to save money!
My dear friend has fallen in love with the sophisticated cottage chic look. Here is a photo that served as inspiration:
Her DIY spare bedroom makeover was a huge success in terms of budget and beauty!
Before beginning a design project, gather your ideas and likes. Pinterest (check out Creative Contessa Design’s Boards) is a great place to find inspiration and tips. I created a board called “Anna’s Room Ideas” when my daughter and I redecorated her bedroom. We collaborated on it and both Pinned things we liked. It was really helpful as a guide when we were repurposing items or shopping for new things. Here is an example of part of her room board on Pinterest:
The focal point for most bedrooms is the bed. My friend Shannon decided to save money by painting her existing wrought iron bed instead of purchasing a big-ticket item. She chose to go for a distressed, white look to introduce the cottage chic look into the room.
She did some research, spoke to the knowledgeable staff at Benjamin Moore, and described her project. Under their recommendation, she decided to go with Benjamin Moore Fresh Start Multi-Purpose Oil Based Primer in White and Benjamin Moore Satin Impervo Alkyd Low Lustre Enamel tinted Ivory Tusk. The ease of application, adherence, and not having to seal it were big selling points.
Before beginning any project, set up your workspace. Gather your materials.
- Drop cloth to protect the floor
- Gloves to protect hands
- Paint stirrers to mix paint for even color and consistency
- Primer to help the paint stick
- Paint in your color choice
- Brushes suited for the size of the piece being painted (Shannon used a small angled bristle brush and a foam brush.)
- Sandpaper to distress
Let the creative process begin!
- Protect the floor in a well-ventilated area.
- Prime with one coat and allow for sufficient drying time.
- Paint with one to two coats to achieve desired coverage allowing plenty of time for the paint to dry.
- Distress with sandpaper, giving extra attention to corners and areas that would show more wear and tear.
- Reassemble the furniture piece in the room and accessorize.
By updating the look of existing furniture pieces and only purchasing minimal accessories, making over a room doesn’t have to empty the bank account!
